The First Tee has developed a unique instructional and certification process. Because our mission is broader than simply teaching kids how to play golf, The First Tee experience also has a strong life skill’s component that includes community service and mentoring opportunity.

The Life Skills experience is one of the features that differentiate The First Tee from any other successful junior golf program. The purpose of this experience is too further enhance and instill the inherent values of the game of golf, and shows participants how these values transfer to other aspects of their lives.

Students are taught how to make decisions: by thinking about the possible consequence; how to define and set goals; the importance of maintaining a positive attitude; and how values such a responsibility, honesty, integrity, respect, confidence and sportsmanship transfer from the golf course to everyday life.

The First Tee of Montana’s program consists of two curricula designed primarily for children 7-18:

* One is focused on golf
* The other is focused on life skills

To make progress, participants must show proficiency in both golf and life.

The Golf Curriculum starts by teaching participants the fundamentals of the game. As players become more skilled, they have the opportunity to progress into competitive tournament play with their mentors as constant guides.

The Life Skills Curriculum was formulated with the help of academics, coaching and golf experts. It is used to further enhance and instill the inherent vales of the game of golf and show participants how these values transfer into other aspects of their lives. Students are taught responsibility, trust, how to make decisions by thinking about the consequences, how to set goals, how to define those goals, the importance of maintaining a positive attitude as well as the importance of showing respect for others. These lessons for life are taught through a variety of golf-related exercises designed with the primary goal of having fun. All of these lessons are based on the NINE CORE VALUES of the First Tee: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment.
